Content: 10/12/00 Obsenad: short piece written for the Senad mailing list. Jim reflects on the partnership. The sequel to Off Topic. With thanks and apologies to Pet Fly, and proceeding under the assumption that forgiveness is easier to ask than permission.... ~ From the Thoughts of Jim Ellison ~ God. I can still smell them, even through two garbage bags. I should have just taken 'em straight down to the dumpster. Would have, if my knee didn't hurt so much. Why did he have to puke all over a brand new pair of Nikes? Granted, a body gutted down to the backbone is pretty ugly. But he'd damn well better get used to that. I've told him before to check his emotions at the door. Or stay in the goddam truck. But does he listen? No. Not him. Instead, he follows me to the murder scene while the killer's still on the loose. He trips and knocks over a slab of wallboard which conveniently tells the perp where we are. He pushes me down in the middle of a firefight and wracks out my knee. He tells Forrestal, in front of the whole goddam swat team, that I got the guy because he was he was backlit by a streetlight that any fool would notice is on the other side of a boarded-up window. And then we find the victim and he pukes on my shoes. Shit. But I gotta admit that if he hadn't pushed me down that bastard would probably have winged me, since I was too focused on tracking him to notice that I was backlit by a streetlight on the other side of a window that wasn't boarded up. I guess a banged-up knee and a pair of ruined shoes are a fair trade for a successful collar and coming home in one piece. Still, the kid's high maintenance. He's been quiet tonight. Not like him. Probably thinks I'm pissed at him. And he's right, I am. Do him good to know it, too. Make him think twice about how he handles himself the next time. He'll learn, if I'm hard enough on him. I only learned because people were hard on me. It's kept me alive all these years. And by god, he's not gonna ... well, he'll learn. Damn, those shoes stink. ~ 30 ~ ~ Return to "The Sentinel" Page ~
